LUIGI PIRANDELLO’S APARTMENT
Luigi Pirandello lived in this apartment at 13b via Bosio in Rome from 1933 to 1936.
It was here that he spent the last three years of his life and wrote his final works.
The apartment consists of a study, a bedroom and a terrace; the furniture as well as the carpets and the curtains are original.
Pirandello’s library is preserved in the study; it comprises more than 2.000 volumes: rare editions, volumes with marginal notes and dedications, first editions of Pirandello’s works, translations, dictionaries, etc.
Unique collections of manuscripts (Enrico IV; U’Ciclopu; A’ Birritta cu’ i ciancianeddi; Uno, nessuno e centomila, etc), numerous autograph letters and photographs are preserved in the apartment.
Visitors can see many items relating to the life of one of the most important personalities of Italian Literature.
The wardrobe in Pirandello’s little bedroom still contains his clothes, his hats, his stick, his uniform of the Accademia d’Italia.
In this bedroom Luigi Pirandello died the 10th December 1936.
ISTITUTO DI STUDI PIRANDELLIANI E SUL TEATRO CONTEMPORANEO
Since 1961 Pirandello’s apartment has been the seat of the Istituto di Studi Pirandelliani e sul Teatro Contemporaneo whose objects are to promote in the every part of the world the study and the appreciation of the plays and other works of Luigi Pirandello, and to care and preserve the precious collections of manuscripts, books, pictures, photographs and objects of artistic and historic interest.
The collections (manuscripts and books) may be consulted only upon request.
The Istituto has organized a library containing many editions of Pirandello’s books as well as secondary literature on his life and work. This library is continuously updated; consultation can only take place on the premises, it is not a lending library. It is possible to do research also consulting an online catalogue: http://opac.uniroma1.it.
The Istituto preserves also the Archive of the writer Ugo Betti with manuscripts (La padrona; La casa nell’acqua; Frana allo Scalo Nord, etc), books, autograph letters and photographs.
Since 1986 the Istituto has published the four-month Review Ariel. Quadrimestrale di drammaturgia dell’Istituto di Studi Pirandelliani e sul Teatro Contemporaneo Rome, Bulzoni Editore.
The Istituto organizes readings, conferences and performances.
